Creating Spaces
Creating Spaces is a community-led art project co-ordinated by New Mills Women’s Group and local artist Claire Parker with funding from The Health Lottery. The sessions run every Sunday (term-time) 2.30-4.30pm at Low Leighton Methodist Church Hall, New Mills.
Creating Spaces will be using art based activities to form intergenerational links and bring together people in Ollersett (New Mills East). Workshops will provide regular opportunities for residents to meet socially and use art to provide ways to express and communicate ideas and issues that will empower and support community cohesion. It will culminate in the production of community made artwork for permanent and public view / display within the community/. The first family crafternoon tea was on Sunday 23rd February 2014.
Claire's aim as the lead artist on the Creating Spaces project is to facilitate appropriate, safe art support and activities suitable for all participants- providing opportunities for enjoyment and creativity to flow where all members of the community can work together with a common theme. As an artist who has used many different mediums in my work she is able to offer a range of art materials through which to explore themes, and along the way teach and demonstrate some new skills and techniques.
The theme for the first part of the project is 'A sense of place' or 'Where we live'... giving us plenty of scope for creative interpretation and ideas to emerge.

A giant map of the area. Working together... working out where roads go and who lives where. How can we create a map of where we live that shows some history? how do places connect... can it demonstrate a visual context? or a feeling and ambition for an area. Can we find a way to show what we like about where we live? and what we hope for..... could it show what we don't like and what we would like to see change? Will our map become a work of art full of colour and texture?? watch this space....
